Mosquitoes

Mosquito overview

Did you know mosquitoes are actually a type of fly. It's true, they are. They have a thin body, thin wings and long legs. Another fun fact, only female mosquitoes bite. Male mosquitoes are not equipped with mouthparts that pierce. Instead they only consume nectar like other insects. Female mosquitoes use their mouthparts to puncture skin and feed on human and animal blood. Blood acts as a supplement to a female's diet providing the essential proteins and iron she needs to assist in egg development. She also needs carbohydrates derived from plant nectar.
