Mosquito overview

Male mosquitoes are not equipped with mouthparts that pierce. Instead they only consume nectar like other insects. Female mosquitoes use their mouthparts to puncture skin and feed on human and animal blood. Blood acts as a supplement to a female's diet providing the essential proteins and iron she needs to assist in egg development. She also needs carbohydrates derived from plant nectar.
