Pest Identification - Fleas

What Are Fleas?

Fleas In ArkansasFleas are insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals and they are one of the most commonly encountered pests.  Fleas are brownish black to black in color and reddish black when filled with blood and an adult measures about 1/8 inch in length.  Larval stage is white, eyeless and legless.  A female flea can lay 4 to 8 eggs on her host after each blood meal and up to 500 eggs during her lifetime.  Adult fleas have the ability to live for months without food.

Why Do I Have Them?

If you have pets then it is likely fleas entered your home on the back of your dog or cat.  Fleas are also excellent jumpers, capable of jumping 6 inches vertically.  They also can be carried into buildings and residences on shoes and clothes, so having pets is not a prerequisite for flea infestations.  Once fleas find a host they will feed, mate and lay eggs in between the hairs of their host.

Are They Dangerous?

Although not often considered dangerous, they can be a bother to both pets and people as their bites may cause persistent itching.  They also host tapeworm and have been known to spread serious health conditions such as the plague and murine typhus.
