What Is A Cockroach?

There are thousands of species of cockroaches in the world but in Arkansas we consider three species to be nuisance pests.  They are the American cockroach, German cockroach and the Smokeybrown cockroach.

American cockroach
Color:  Reddish-Brown
Distinguishing Characteristics: Light colored edges to the body and wings that appear longer than the body
Length:  1 to 1 ½ inches

German cockroach
Color:  Light Brown
Distinguishing Characteristics: Dark lengthwise strips on the head
Length:  1/4 to 5/8 inch

Smokeybrown cockroach
Color:  Brownish-Black
Distinguishing Characteristics: Well developed wings that stretch to the tip of the abdomen
Length:  1 to 2 inches

Why Do I Have Them?

Cockroaches are scavengers that will seek out an environment that is suitable for breeding.  Wet basements, kitchens and bathrooms are preferred areas as they provide the critical elements: food, water, humidity, warmth and security.

Are They Dangerous?

Many illnesses and health problems have been linked to cockroaches because they carry viral and bacterial pathogens on their bodies and in their feces which can cause, among others:

  • Salmonella Poisoning

  • Asthma Attack

  • Diarrhea

  • Dysentery
