In a nutshell, pest exclusion is the act of denying pest access to the inside of your home and/or business. Seems simple, right? Though it can be time intensive, excluding pests from your structure is achieved by implementing preventative strategies that when combined really make your structure pest-proof. And of course, if you partner with a pest control provider that focuses on resolving infestations using a Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach (that includes exclusion techniques) then your home or business will really be protected!
Now, back to the topic at hand. There are many different methods of pest exclusion that are all designed to do the same thing...prevent pests from getting into the home or commercial facility. At McCauley Services we work directly with home and business owners in Little Rock and throughout Arkansas to help them identify areas of concern as well as how to fix them. Here are some of our most effective pest exclusion tips:
Seal off any exterior cracks, holes, or crevices so that pests cannot sneak inside. Keep in mind rodents only need a hole the size of a dime to gain entrance so make sure to seal EVERY gap or opening.
Apply a crushed rock perimeter around the exterior of the building to help to ward off rodents including mice and rats that do not favor uneven terrain.
Apply weather stripping to the doors to help create a tight seal.
Replace or repair torn or ripped screens covering doors and windows OR simply keep doors closed if they do not have screens.
Eliminate clutter including piles of boxes, papers or other belongings to prevent harborage for pests.
Be strict with sanitation efforts in both homes and business to eliminate food and water sources. This includes emptying the kitchen sink of dirty dishes every night and taking the trash out on a regular basis as well as cleaning up crumbs, spills and grease immediately.
