House spiders are a common problem in Little Rock, Hot Springs and throughout Arkansas. |
Have you noticed spiders in your Arkansas home? Like many homeowners in Little Rock and throughout Arkansas, you've probably have and really it’s not surprising because spiders like the American house spider have been enjoying the higher insect levels that come along with summer. While they are helpful in keeping the insect population down, unfortunately they often move indoors to find secure areas to build their webs.
Spiders are slightly creepy to encounter and the webs they create often become unsightly when they are abandoned. Dust and other particles will catch in webs that are constructed in corners, closets and areas where ceilings and walls meet while spiders move to a new location and start building anew.
So other than their unattractive webs and nuisance presence, is there really any reason to worry about having your home infested with house spiders? No – the American house spider is not a harmful species and though it may bite, its venom is not dangerous to people. The brown recluse spider, however, does reside in Arkansas as well and may also take shelter in homes. They will bite if they are disturbed or cornered and unlike common house spiders their bites can produce mild irritation, open sores, or may even result in death. Look for these shy arachnids during the night when they come out looking for prey.
In order to prevent house spiders from invading as well as other overwintering insects that tend to make their way inside during the cooler weather, McCauley Services recommends:
Identifying any openings in the structure that would allow spiders to gain access
Sealing any cracks or crevices in the foundation or around doors and windows
Installing screens over attic vents
