McCauley's pest prevention tips can help you protect your Arkansas home from mce and other rodents |
When you hear mice running through your walls or spot one in your kitchen or pantry, it can be very disturbing. Sharing your home with mice and rodents is not only unappealing; it can be hazardous to the health of you and your family and may even result in damage to your home.
Commensal rodents, while seemingly harmless, are capable of contaminating food and may ruin furniture, insulation and other items with their urine and droppings and can even cause a fire when they gnaw on electrical wires. Rodents are also known carriers of serious diseases including: Lymphocytic choriomeningitis, Salmonellosis and Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.
Because mice multiply quickly, you should take immediate action as soon as you realize you have a mouse problem. Better yet, consider pest-proofing your home so that mice, rats and other invaders can’t enter in the first place. Here are a few prevention tips to help you keep mice and other rodents out and your home and family safe:
Seal openings. By sealing any cracks or holes in your home that are larger than ¼ inch you can deny access to mice. Don’t forget to inspect and correct gaps in your foundation and around your utilities, and repair or replace any ripped or torn screen doors and windows. Installing vents and chimney caps will also make your home more secure and less inviting to rodents and other invading pests.
Eliminate their food source. Don’t make it easy for mice to feast in and around your home. Store people and pet food in tightly sealed containers, preferably made of glass or another material that can withstand sharp teeth. Also keep your trash in containers with tight fitting lids. Don’t leave pet food outside for more than one hour and remove any outdoor feeders.
Take away their hiding places. Keep storage areas organized and free of boxes and other clutter so that mice cannot nest in and among items. Keep firewood off the ground and well away from your home and make sure shrubs are trimmed regularly and weeds and other plants are kept away from the foundation to eliminate possible rodent nesting areas.
