Reported cases of bed bugs have been confirmed all across Arkansas, protect yourself as you travel this holiday season with these tips from McCauley Services |
With Christmas less than a week away, families throughout Little Rock, Benton, Hot Springs and all across Arkansas are packing their bags and getting ready to “head over the river and through the woods” to enjoy a festive visit with Grandma. Unfortunately, with the extended guest list this year and no room left at Grandma’s, you’ll be spending the holidays in a hotel room. Reported cases of bed bugs are on the rise all across Arkansas, so to avoid bringing home more than memories this holiday season, McCauley Services, a longtime AR pest control company, would like to offer a few tips on how to avoid bed bugs when traveling.
Before you make reservations, check the bed bug status of hotels by visiting bedbugregistry.com; try and avoid hotels that may have recently experienced a bed bug problem
Inspect your hotel room before you enter it; bring a small flashlight and search the nooks and crannies of the room including: mattresses and box springs, upholstered furniture, along carpeted walls, behind pictures and along baseboards. Signs of bed bug activity to be on the lookout for are live bed bugs, but also, dead bed bugs, dark blood spots, bed bug casings or caste skins
If your search turns up bed bugs, notify hotel management immediately and ask for a new room as far away as possible from the infested room or leave the hotel all together. If you have deemed your room bed bug free, it is safe to enter, but do not unpack your luggage into the hotel’s bureaus. Keep it stored well off the floor on the provided luggage racks in the room
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, so when the celebrations are over and you have arrived home, you should inspect your luggage before you bring it into your home. Bed bug infestations have been reported on busses, taxis and airplanes, so unless you traveled in your own car, you may have unknowingly been exposed to bed bugs.
Wash all of your clothing in the hottest temperature allowed by the fabric, which will help kill bed bugs that may have traveled home with you
