Protect your home from overwintering insects and rodents such as spiders and mice

Autumn in Arkansas offers relief from the extreme temperatures of summer and brings spectacular views of fall foliage.  Unfortunately, October is when many of us also start to see nuisance insects and rodents making their way into our homes in search of overwintering sites.  Prevent ants, spiders, mice and other pest from becoming a problem this winter by pest-proofing your home now.

To make sure your home doesn’t become a haven for overwintering insects and rodents, McCauley Services suggests these fall pest-proofing tips:

  • Remove abandoned tires, appliances, furniture and other items from your property.

  • Store firewood off of the ground and at least 20 feet away from the house.

  • Keep shrubbery trimmed away from your foundation and remove weeds and overgrowth around your yard.

  • Screen vents and install a chimney cap on your chimney.Repair or replace damaged door and window screens.

  • Remove bird and wildlife feeders.

  • Seal any cracks and crevices on the outside of your home that are larger than ¼ inch.

  • Keep garbage secure in metal containers with tight fitting lids.
