Unfortunately for us, there are several species of ants that call Arkansas home and as the warm weather of spring drives away our cabin fever, it also rouses these pesky insects. Depending on the species, ants can be simply a nuisance pest or they can cause structural damages in your home. From the pest control experts at McCauley Services here are a few facts on ants in Arkansas as well as some do-it- yourself ant prevention tips.
Odorous house ant
Mostly a nuisance pest, odorous house ants are the most common ant species to be found marching through your kitchen in search of a sweet treat. They are small ants only 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch and are a brown or black color. Odorous house ants are said to give off a rotten coconut-like scent when threatened or crushed.
Fire ants are more of a concern than odorous house ants due to their more aggressive behavior. These guys are a reddish-brown color and are slightly larger than others in our region, ranging from 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. When you come into contact with a fire ant, watch out because their bites pack a powerful sting and could require medical attention.
Last but certainly not least is the carpenter ant. Posing a significant threat to the structure of your home, these destructive insects are likely to be found carving galleries into moist, decaying wood. Unlike termites, they are not actually eating the wood, but they are still capable of pretty extensive structural damage.
Keep open food stored in containers with tight fitting lids.
Clean and sanitize food surfaces to prevent attracting odorous house ants.
Prevent high levels of moisture in your home with a dehumidifier if necessary as all ants require moisture for survival.
Clear wood debris from your property to avoid carpenter ants from nesting on your property.
Redirect water sources to flow away from your property to again prevent more moisture.
