The black widow spider is probably one of the most recognizable Arkansas spiders found in homes throughout Benton, Little Rock, Hot Springs and across the state. These spiders prefer to spin their webs outdoors, in dark, secluded places, usually near the ground, but can also be found inside our homes in the dark corners of garages, sheds, basements and crawl spaces; where ever there is an ample amount of wandering insects for them to feast on. McCauley Services, a longtime Arkansas pest control company, understands just how terrifying the thought of sharing your home with black widow spiders can be, which is why they’d like to offer a few tips to Arkansas homeowners that will help keep black widow spiders out.
Inspect your home- Look for small holes, cracks or crevices around any wires, cables, outdoor faucets, electrical outlets or vents; fill in with caulking
Seal any cracks in your foundation
Replace or repair any torn or damaged screens
Apply weather stripping around your windows and doors
Install door sweeps
Keep your kitchen clean; this will discourage other pests that black widows like to eat
Trim back any trees and shrubs, paying close attention to ivy
Get rid of any rock piles or yard debris around your property; this provides black widows ideal hiding places
Do not store fire wood near your home and remember to wear gloves when moving wood to prevent a black widow spider bite
Use a yellow light bulb for your outdoor lighting; insects, otherwise known as spider food are attracted to white light, brush down any webs on outdoor lighting frequently
Do not store items loosely, keep unused blankets, old clothing and other items in plastic containers with tight-fitting lids; do not store items in cardboard boxes, these are easily accessed by black widow spiders
